Mozambique: Nampula awaits delivery of new hospital as HCN exhausts capacity

The Mozambican health authorities have once again confirmed that Maputo city is the epicenter of the Covid-19 epidemic in the country, with the great majority of the new cases diagnosed coming from the capital.
According to a Thursday press release from the Health Ministry, since the start of the pandemic, 227,185 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,423 of them in the previous 24 hours.
Of the samples tested, well over half (890) were from Maputo city and 202 from Maputo province. So 77 per cent of all the tests held in the 24 hour period were from Maputo city and province. There were also 110 people tested in Gaza, 105 in Cabo Delgado, 65 in Nampula, 18 in Zambezia, 13 in Sofala, 10 in Manica and 10 in Tete.
1,258 of the tests were negative, and 165 people tested positive for the coronavirus. Since the first case was diagnosed on 22 March, 15,467 cases of coronavirus have been found. Of the new cases, 158 are Mozambicans, three are Indians, three are Portuguese, and one is Chinese.
80 of the cases are men or boys and 85 are women or girls. Seven are children under the age of 15, and four are over 65 years old. No age information was available for two cases.
119 of the cases were from Maputo city and 14 were from Maputo province. Thus Maputo city and province accounted for over 80 per cent of the new cases. There were also 13 cases from Sofala, nine from Cabo Delgado, four from Nampula, three from Zambezia and three from Gaza.
The release said that, in line with standard Health Ministry procedure, all 165 new cases are now in home isolation, and their contacts are being traced.
Over the same 24 hour period, three Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital, but two others were admitted, all in Maputo city. Currently 35 people are under medical care in the Covid-19 isolation wards – 31 in Maputo, two in Zambezia, one in Matola and one in Tete.
The Ministry reported that, over the same period, a further 61 people made a full recovery from Covid-19 (36 in Maputo city, 15 in Manica and ten in Zambezia). This brings the total number of recoveries to 13,520, which is 87.4 per cent of all those diagnosed with the coronavirus.
The number of active Covid-19 cases is now 1,815, distributed as follows: Maputo city, 1,597; Cabo Delgado, 51; Maputo province, 46; Sofala, 30; Nampula, 27; Gaza, 25; Manica, 12; Zambezia, 10; Inhambane, eight; Tete, seven; Niassa, two.
No further deaths from Covid-19 were reported in this 24 hour period. The death toll thus remains 128. 98 of these deaths (77 per cent) have occurred in Maputo city.
