Maputo province in southern Mozambique loses half of its piped drinking water to theft and network sabotage, Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, is quoted as saying today.
“We lose half the water we produce, and that’s a lot. These losses result from theft, sabotage and unbilled consumption,” Minister Mesquita said during a water infrastructure inspection visit in the province on Thursday.
The minister said that the theft of potable water was the main cause of losses, despite the fact that water diversion had dropped from 51% to 46% of water wastage from the network.
“We must appeal directly to the population” to refrain from illegally accessing water supply, a deeply rooted habit in several neighbourhoods, he stressed.
