Health units in Maputo province are short of blood needed to meet the demand that traffic and industrial accidents are placing on them.
Matola Provincial Hospital – the largest health unit in the province – is operating with 160 blood units, against the 200 needed, for example.
Manhiça District Hospital, which has recently been receiving a constant stream of patients injured in traffic accidents, is currently ten units short of the 80 units of blood it needs to meet demand.
Tânia de Almeida, who is responsible for disease prevention and control at Maputo Provincial Health Services, has launched an appeal for the population to donate blood.
Maputo province currently has four hospitals – two in the municipality of Matola and two others in the district of Manhiça. Only those in Matola and the Xinavane Rural Hospital in Manhiça have blood banks.
