Hundreds of employees in different areas of Maputo municipality employment suspended activities indefinitely on Monday in support of their demand for a salary increase and their inclusion in the Single Salary Table (TSU).
The men and women concerned were protesting outside the city council building, claiming that a monthly salary of 4,000 meticais fails to match the high cost of living.
According to the Director of Human Resources for the Municipality of Maputo, Octávio de Jesus, the city council is not in a position to pay salaries in line with the new Single Salary Table (TSU).
“We have almost 4,000 employees and most of them earn the minimum wage, which should be doubled, according to the TSU, but we don’t have the financial conditions, due to other commitments,” he said.
The source added that, for the application of TSU salary levels, an external financial injection of around 30 million meticais would be needed.
“We already had a meeting to inform the colleagues that the municipality does not have the funds to pay salaries according to the TSU,” he added.
