The National Criminal Investigation Service, at the level of the city of Maputo, arrested a kidnapping suspect, TV Miramar reported on Monday (August 28). The 32-year-old man was arrested in Gaza province over his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of a woman on Karl Marx Avenue, Maputo city, in May.
“The investigation into this kidnapping began as soon as we became aware of the abduction of this citizen, [which took place] in the vicinity of the Fábrica de Confecções [clothing factory, here in the city of Maputo. Procedures began and joined others that have been carried out to clarify the several cases of kidnapping that have occurred in the city of Maputo,,” SERNIC spokesman Hilário Lole told Miramar.

SERNIC pinpoints this suspect as a member of a kidnapping gang. “We have information in our possession according to which this individual, in addition to carrying out the crimes of kidnapping, is also supposedly someone who has been luring, recruiting individuals to commit this crime,” said Lole.
“We are working with the information he brought to and also, in coordination with our South African counterpart, seeking more information, to assess better assess this [the suspect’s information]. But the data that we have at the moment is that this individual is pointed to, in the meander of this criminal world, for the practice of this type of crime,” he added.

The detainee , who was arrested in Gaza upon his return from South Africa, denies the accusation, namely concerning the May kidnapping, on the grounds that, on the date this abduction took place in Maputo, he was in prison.
