The transport of people in private vehicles in exchange for payment is now on the radar of the Maputo’s municipal authorities, who see it is an economic activity which should therefore be formalised.
Taking into account the growing trend of “paid rides” [boleia paga] in different parts of the city, the authorities on Monday launched an awareness campaign with a view to formalisation.
A multidisciplinary team made up of the municipal, traffic and protection police and Maputo City Public Prosecutor’s Office, took to the streets and approached motorists in some locations with a view to persuading them to formalise the practice.
According to the newspaper ‘Domingo’, a group of “operators” have already formed an association, with a view to following the rules, and have even submitted the respective request to the Municipal Transport and Traffic Directorate (DMTT).
The commander of the Municipal Police, Ernesto Zualo, clarifies that there is currently no intention to prevent citizens from operating in the transport sector.
