One hundred and twelve million meticais (around US$1.5 million at current exchange rates) is the amount lacking to guarantee the 2020/2021 Cyclonic and Rainy Season Contingency Plan for the city of Maputo, where extreme weather events could affect as many as 70,690 residents.
At the moment, the city has 68 million meticais (around US$911,350) out of the total 180 million meticais (US$2.4 million] needed to guard against the current rainy season.
Presenting the Contingency Plan this Thursday, Mayor of Maputo Eneas Comiche said that urban flooding could affect the already-known vulnerable neighbourhoods of Costa do Sol, Muthanhane, Central C, Polana Caniço (A and C) and parts of Malanga, Luís Cabral and Chamanculo (B and C).
Comiche said that outbreaks of malaria were forecast for the months of October, November and December, while the possibility of cholera and diarrhoea outbreaks is foreseen for the months of January, February and March.
“The Maputo City plan to mitigate the harmful effects of the rains and cyclones presents three socio-economic weather impact scenarios. The first scenario foresees 13,050 residents being affected, the second, 25,771, and the third, 31,869,” the mayor explained, stressing that seven accommodation centres would be opened – the equivalent of one centre for each municipal district.
