The Manica Health Research Centre (CISM) in southern Mozambique has adapted its malaria vaccine research laboratory equipment to test for Covid-19, its director said on Monday.
Eusébio Macete told Radio Moçambique that the repurposed laboratories would be able to carry out 100 tests a day, and that lab personnel had already received the necessary training.
The CISM director said that the institution was also collaborating with World Health Organisation efforts to find a vaccine for Covid-19, building on its experience in malaria vaccine research.
Mozambique has so far had 14 deaths among 1,973 registered Covid-19 cases.
Worldwide, the Covid-19 pandemic has so far caused more than 689,000 deaths and infected more than 18.1 million people in 196 countries and territories.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
After Europe succeeded China as the centre of the pandemic in February, the American continent now has the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
