After a nine-year hiatus, the government is once again handing over management of the Kassuende Bridge over the Zambezi River in Tete, and part of National Highways Numbers 7, 9 and 304, a total length of more than 700 kilometres, to the Estradas do Zambeze Concessionaire.
The implementation of toll fees on the Cuchamano-Changara and Changara-Tete-Zóbuè roads resulted in a public outcry in May, 2015, due to the high fees charged, despite the poor quality of the service provided.
In view of this, the government ordered a suspension and the improvement of the roads, and decided to hand over the management of the more than 700-kilometre stretch to the Zambeze Roads Concessionaire for a period of thirty years.
Three tolls will be implemented and, this time, the rates will be based on the Self-Sustained Road Maintenance Programme. The government however does not guarantee any compensation to the concessionaire in the event of there being less traffic on the road.
The concessionaire is aware of the challenge it faces, and will use the experience acquired in improving the infrastructure since 2019.
The memorandum of understanding, signed this Tuesday between the government and the Zambeze Roads Concessionaire, is valid for thirty years, and covers maintenance of the infrastructure as well its management.
