The Mozambique national football team climbed five places in the FIFA rankings, released this Thursday. The Mambas entered the Top 100 of the world’s largest football entity, for the first time in the last six years. The series of positive results in the last games contributed to the national team’s rise in the FIFA rankings.
The 1-1 draw against Mali and the 2-1 victory against Guinea-Bissau, in the qualifying matches for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Games, which will be held in Morocco, contributed to the rise in the FIFA rankings.
With this rise, Mozambique is back in FIFA’s top 100 for the first time this year, now with 1226.03 points, compared to 1208.87 points in the last update last month, when the Mozambican national football team was in 104th position.
The Mambas could see this position improve further if they win their next games against Eswatini, a theoretically more accessible opponent, according to the national football coach, Chiquinho Conde, at the end of the game against Guinea-Bissau.
Despite this rise, the Mambas are still far from their best ranking achieved in 1997, when they occupied position 66. The last time Mozambique was in the Top 100 was in July 2017, when it reached position 97.
On the African continent, Mozambique is the 22nd best team.
Morocco, the team that stood out in the last World Cup, is the highest-ranked African team in the FIFA rankings with 1,676 points, in 14th place in the world rankings, followed by Senegal, which dropped two places and is in 21st place, while Egypt is in 31st place.
As for Portuguese-speaking countries, Brazil and Portugal remain in the Top 10, namely in 5th and 8th places, maintaining their previous positions. Cape Verde is the highest-ranked among the PALOP countries, occupying position 65 in the FIFA rankings with 1,379 points, followed by Angola, which also rose five places and is in 85th place.
The overall FIFA ranking continues to be led by Argentina. World champion, winner of the Copa América and current leader of the qualifying phase for the 2026 World Cup in the South American zone, it has 1,889.2 points. The Top 3 also includes France, current world runner-up, and Spain, European football champion.
Globally, the top 10 teams remain unchanged, with Argentina holding the top spot, followed by France and Spain in second and third, respectively. England, Brazil, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Colombia, and Italy round out the top 10. No African team made it into the global top 10.
