Mozambique, Malawi reactivate US$120 million power line project

The governments of Mozambique and its neighboring Malawi agreed on Tuesday in Maputo to reactivate the construction of a 120 mln U.S. dollar electric power line to supply Malawi with energy, said Mateus Magala, chairman of the Mozambican Electric Company.
The first memorandum of the project was signed by both countries in 1998 to connect their electric systems, but the changing of governments in Malawi delayed its carrying out.
Magala said that once the project is concluded, the region will witness an increase of energy transactions.
“Mozambique will cover 140 km and the remaining 78 km will be covered by Malawi, in terms of funds involved we are looking to about 120 million U.S. dollars or more than that,” said Magala.
According to Magala, the line will deliver about 200 megawatts of energy enough for Malawian needs and part of the energy will be generated from the Cahora Bassa dam in central Tete province of Mozambique. The construction phase of the project will last for 3 years.
