Mozambique: 144 medium-voltage pylons downed by bad weather in Gaza and Maputo provinces
Two public consultation sessions are scheduled for August 28 and 29 in the central Mozambican cities of Tete and Moatize to hear submissions concerning the construction of an energy transmission line linking Mozambique and Malawi.
According to a note from Moaambique Electricity (EDM) published in Noticias today, the sale of electricity to Malawi would start within five years, and follow from a purchase intention formalised with the Mozambican authorities in 1998.
Since then, Malawi has been hesitant in moving forward with the construction of the Tete-Phombeya power line and other infrastructure.
However, last year Lilongwe expressed renewed interest in implementing the initiative, and its public electricity company, Electricity Supply Corporations of Malawi (ESCOM), has been working with EDM closely on the project.
Against this background, a seminar was held in Maputo in June to present the results of economic, financial and environmental and social impact studies.

The connection project includes the construction of a 218-kilometre 400 kilovolt transmission line and two substations, one in Matambo in Tete province and another in Phombeya, in Malawi.
EDM chairman Mateus Magala said forecasts pointed to US$120 million to finance the project, of which US$95 million would be used to build the line and substations and the rest to pay for rural electrification along the corridor.
