Malaria deaths and infections in Niassa fell from 54 in 292,692 cases between January and April last year to 37 deaths in 126,578 cases in the same period this year, it was revealed at presentation on the epidemiological situation in the province attended by Niassa governor Elina Judite Massengele.
Ramos Mboane, provincial director of Health and spokesman for the Provincial Executive Council of Niassa, however reported that diarrhoea cases had increased, although deaths from the same had decreased slightly.
In the first two weeks of April, Ramos Mboane continued, Niassa registered a 6.7 percent increase in the number of diarrhoea cases, to a total of 19,876, five of whom lost their lives.
In the same period last year, diarrhoea killed six individuals out of a total of 18,621 cases .
Regarding animal bites and rabies, no-one had died this year, despite there being 306 instances recorded. Last year, one individual among the 380 attacked by animals lost his life.
Regarding Covid-19 situation in the province, there is a cumulative total of 2,495 confirmed cases, of which 178 are currently active.
The province has recorded three Covid-19-related deaths, and was allocated 23,000 doses for the current vaccination campaign.
Ten thousand, three hundred and eighty-eight people will be vaccinated, including final year health sector students, patients with diabetes, and primary teachers over the age of 50.
