Development company Maputo Sul, which owns the Macanneta bridge and Maputo Ring Road, is to start charging a toll to use the bridge from today.
The toll is in four tiers, ranging from 50 meticais for motorcycles and light vehicles with or without trailer through 85 meticais for minibuses and medium freight vehicles with two axles, 350 meticais for three- and four-axle vehicles, and 900 meticais for heavy loads with five axles or more.
The tariffs to cross the Incomáti by bridge are lower than those charged for the crossing by barge, with a light vehicle now paying 50 meticais against the previous 180 and a minibus paying 85 as against 450 meticais.
Apart from the costs, the new bridge offers the advantage of flexibility, with people and goods able to cross the Incomáti at any time regardless of weather conditions and navigation constraints.
Previously, drivers and other travellers were liable to spend hours or even days waiting to cross due to the irregularity of the ferry service, often aggravated by breakdowns.
