The Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, and Fisheries (MAAP) and the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA) held a working meeting in Maputo this Monday, August 4th, aimed at strengthening public-private dialogue in the agricultural and fisheries sector.
The meeting began with the introduction of the newly appointed leadership of the CTA’s Agribusiness and Fisheries Development and Sustainability, Circular Economy, and Climate Change departments.
On the occasion, CTA Vice President Onório Manuel reaffirmed the private sector’s commitment to collaborating with MAAP to promote modern, resilient, and sustainable agriculture. He highlighted the country’s potential to achieve food self-sufficiency and position itself as a competitive exporter, emphasizing the importance of consistent public policies and mutual trust between sectors.
One of the highlights was the mention of the Catalytic Fund for Agricultural Financing, hailed by the CTA as a strategic instrument for boosting rural investment, promoting innovation, and strengthening value chains. The CTA warned of the need to ensure transparent, efficient and inclusive management of the fund, guaranteeing the effective participation of the private sector from conception to implementation.
For his part, Minister Roberto Mito Albino highlighted the existing good collaboration with the CTA and called for the joint definition of clear goals.
He questioned the lack of a development law to date and emphasized the importance of establishing a concrete work agenda, before addressing the need for a bank dedicated to the agricultural sector in the country, “a mission that the MAAP is committed to pursuing”, he emphasized.
Another point raised was the fight against illegal practices in the sector, such as chicken smuggling. “We cannot normalize illegality,” the minister said, calling for the private sector to “purify its ranks” and overcome entrenched vices. He also emphasized the need for a poultry farming policy and highlighted the importance of land use planning as a priority.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to cooperation and coordinated action.
“The ministry is committed to the country’s development, and we need to work together to create a favourable agribusiness environment,” Minister Albino stated, reiterating that the ministry would keep its doors open for regular meetings with the CTA in this format, having highlighted MAAP focal points for each of the areas covered by that business organization’s portfolios.
