The former Minister of State Administration Lucas Chomera died on Saturday evening, of what is believed to have been a cardiac arrest, CanalMoz reports. He was 69 years old.
Chomera was at a family gathering in Maputo province and collapsed, Canalmoz reports, citing a source close to the family.
O País reports that, again according to a family source, he was taken to the Matola Provincial Hospital, where he lost his life soon afterwards.
Lucas Chomera Jeremias held several positions in Mozambique’s public administration, and was currently serving as Advisor to the Prime Minister in the area of Governance and Parliamentary Affairs.
Prior to this, Chomera served as a deputy at the Assembly of the Republic, where he was chairman of the Public Administration and Local Government Commission and First Vice-President of Parliament.
He served as Minister of State Administration (2005 – 2010) in the government led by President Armando Guebuza, and Governor of Zambézia province (2000-2005) under President Joaquim Chissano.
Verónica Macamo, former President of the Assembly of the Republic and current Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, highlighted Chomera’s professional qualities, having worked with him in the Mozambican parliament for several years.
“He was my colleague, in addition to being my comrade for more than ten years in the Assembly of the Republic. We worked together for five years, with him as chairman of the Board of Directors of the Assembly of the Republic and as First Vice-President of the Assembly of the Republic. We were currently working together in his capacity as advisor to the Prime Minister. It is a great loss,” Minister Macamo said.
Aiuba Cuereneia, former Planning and Development Minister, also remembers Lucas Chomera as a professional of exceptional quality. “I highlight his human qualities here; he was very friendly and talkative, and always willing to share his experience. And he was also my teacher – as a colleagues in the Government, I always felt that he was willing to share his expertise when we talked about the country and about our work.”
Castigo Langa, former Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, highlights Chomra’s commitment to work and sense of mission. “It is a great loss. Comrade Chomera was a mature leader. I had the opportunity to know him and work with him in various government matters. I always admired, as a minister, him for his sense of purpose and discipline, and his ability to lead and get people to work for a common purpose.”
Academically, Chomera specialised in Public Health at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, He also served as Deputy National Director for Public Health and National Director of Human Resources at the Ministry of Health.
Lucas Chomera Jeremias was born on November 14, 1953, in Beira, Sofala province. He leaves a widow, four children and five grandchildren.
