A low head dam (weir) with the capacity to supply 100,000 cubic metres of water per day to communities and institutions in Mossurize district, Manica province, was handed over on Friday (26-05).
Deputy Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Cecília Chamutota, presided over the ceremony.
The Mpengo weir can store about 12,000 cubic metres of water and will benefit approximately 5,000 people, in addition to more than 500 head of cattle and goats. It will also enable the irrigation of around 100 hectares of agricultural land, thus boosting the socio-economic development of the region.
During her speech, Deputy Minister Chamutota expressed the government’s ongoing commitment to prioritising water supply for various uses through specific programs, with emphasis on the “Water for Life” PRAVIDA programme, a comprehensive, nation-wide presidential initiative.
She noted that the government’s 2020-2024 Five Year Program foresees the construction of 20 small reservoirs in the provinces of Manica, Sofala and Tete.
Chamutota emphasised the importance of adopting good practices to protect water sources and preserve their quality, calling on the district government to raise awareness and educate communities about the sustainable use of the reservoir, as well as to ensure its conservation and avoid harmful practices such as garbage disposal and the entry of cattle into restricted areas.
