Mozambique loses 700 million US dollars annually due to timber smuggling, a significant concern for the government. In response, authorities are developing a management and control instrument for the forestry subsector.
This instrument will be an automated Forest Information System aimed at enhancing the flow of management and oversight actions within the forestry sector. This information was shared last Tuesday by the national director of Forests, Cláudio Afonso, during a sector seminar held in Quelimane.
According to Afonso, the Forest Information System will be fully operational next year. He believes that the computerized system will bring greater transparency and interactivity to the forestry sector, enabling faster processes and more informed decision-making.
With this system, forestry operators will be able to request permits remotely and electronically.
As part of efforts to improve forest management, the national director of Forests also revealed ongoing initiatives for surveillance and transnational cooperation on forest conservation and deforestation.
