Illegal fishing in the country is a major concern for the government, which has been looking for ways to combat it. Besides decimating several marine species in the country, which are in extinction, the situation is also creating damages to the national economy. Per year, the country loses about 60 million dollars as a result of illegal fishing.
As a way to combat this practice, Mozambique participated in the creation of the Fish – i – Africa platform, with the aim of sharing information on illegal fishing. In fact, Mozambique was the country chosen in the Southern Africa Region to build a regional center for control of illegal fishing.
The 7th Fish – i – Africa regional meeting in Maputo is to be attended by eight African countries that share the coast with Mozambique and will last for three days.
