Mozambique's fuel import bill soars in 2024

Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy of Mozambique, Carlos Zacarias, has expressed interest in the country joining the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) as a full member, according to a note from the ministry.
Zacarias announced his aspiration during a meeting with GECF secretary general Mohamed Hamel, within the scope of the body’s ministerial meeting in Cairo, Egypt, newspaper Notícias reports.
On the occasion, Hamel said that Mozambique would become the fifth largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the world, once production starts in the Rovuma basin in the north of the country.
Hamel appealed to the country to continue to develop a legal and regulatory framework suitable for the oil industry.

Today’s GECF meeting in Cairo has on its agenda a discussion of the global gas market, the GECF executive committee’s management report and a review of long-term strategy.
The GECF is an intergovernmental organisation created for the exchange of experiences between member countries, producers and consumers with a view to improving the stability and security of supply and demand in the world’s gas market.
The full-fledged Members of the GECF are: Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela.
Angola, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Malaysia, Mozambique, Norway, Peru, and UAE currently hold the status of Observers.
The organization’s member countries between them hold 72% of the world’s gas reserves, and oversee 43% of commercial production.
