Mozambique: Locomotive breaks down the day after inaugural Beira-Dondo trip

Ports and Railways of Mozambique (CFM) has announced in a communiqué that the locomotive which on Monday hauled the first passenger train in 30 years from Beira to Dondo, broke down on Tuesday morning.
The train was about to make what would be its second trip from Dondo to Beira when the locomotive broke down and as a consequence, passenger transport between the two cities in Sofala province was suspended.
According to the CFM note, the locomotive suffered a malfunction in the electronic starting system just as it was preparing to make the second trip.
In the note, CFM apologised for the inconvenience to passengers and guaranteed that the problem would be solved in the next few hours, given that the locomotive was still in the commissioning process and the manufacturer’s technicians were still in the city.

The locomotives acquired by CFM are made in India and serve to reinforce the passenger transport service in the interurban areas of the southern and central rail systems with greater comfort and convenience, the CFM communique reads.
