The population of Cabo Delgado province has found the remains of a person who may have been a victim of terrorist groups operating in northern Mozambique, community sources have told Lusa today.
The body, showing signs of violence, was found on Saturday on the banks of the Messalo river by a group of residents from Nkoe who were looking for an area to plant tobacco.
“It is the body of an elderly man who lived near the river. He had returned there at a time when there were many attacks [by terrorists],” explained a source. speaking from the district of Macomia.
According to the same source, people believe that this attack is the result of a new incursion by terrorist groups, who were seen in the area last week.
“It can only be them, because they continue to circulate in our fields,” said the source.
The local population has since decided to build huts in groups, rather than living dispersed as they do now, in an attempt to mitigate the threat.
“We are already building huts, but no one should live alone on the machamba [agricultural field]. We have to be together and in the mornings go to work together – this can help control the bandits’ movements,” explained another source.
Since October 2017, the province of Cabo Delgado, rich in gas, has been facing an armed rebellion, with some attacks claimed by movements associated with the extremist Islamic State group.
The last major attack took place on 10 and 11 May, in the district headquarters of Macomia, with around a hundred insurgents looting the town, resulting in several deaths and heavy fighting with the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces and the Rwandan military, which is supporting Maputo in the fight against the rebels.
