Local Forces from the district of Metuge this Thursday (07-03) released several children who had been locked up by terrorists the previous day, while they were in class at Pulo primary school, Carta de Moçambique reports.
“They took the children and put them all in the room and closed the door and left at around 7:00 p.m.,” a source said, suggesting that “it appears their intention was for them [the children] not to get lost during their escape”.
According to sources in Metuge-headquarters town, the children were freed by the Local Forces who arrived in Pulo village after the population had fled on Wednesday due to the presence of terrorists.
“Both forces were supposed to go: the FDS and the Local Force, but the FDS allegedly refused, saying they had not been paid for three months. So the Local Force went alone,” said another source, adding that “there are reports of deaths, although [they are] not revealing the numbers”.
The terrorists, supposedly moving from Chiúre, entered the village of Pulo at around 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, firing their weapons, which created panic. Some of the village residents have taken refuge in the district headquarters of Metuge and in the city of Pemba. The population of nearby Nacuta also fled to the main village of Metuge.
