The presentation of candidacies for the 11 October local elections in Mozambique will take place between 20 July and 11 August, the Mozambican National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced in Maputo on Monday.
“The act of presenting candidacies will take place from 20 July to 11 August this year,” CNE spokesman Paulo Cuinica said at a press conference.
Cuinica said that until 14 July, 23 political parties, coalitions and groups of citizens had registered to take part in the vote.
He also called on parties to comply with the law on the mandatory presentation of substitute candidates, noting that non-compliance with this rule has led to the disqualification of candidate lists.
“Proponents should be concerned about the number of alternates,” and should present “at least three alternates and a maximum equivalent to the number of seats” of each municipal assembly.
Around 10 million Mozambicans will choose 65 new mayors on 11 October, including in 12 new municipalities, which join 53 existing ones.
In the 2018 local elections, Frelimo won in 44 of the 53 municipalities and the opposition in only nine.
