Lisbon’s Gulbenkian Foundation announced on Wednesday an emergency support to the displaced people in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, worth 80,000 euros to respond to the “humanitarian tragedy”, which mainly affects young people and pregnant women.
“The recent attacks on Palma have aggravated the situation and increased the number of displaced people, who are gathering on the outskirts of Pemba in very difficult conditions; the humanitarian agencies present in Cabo Delgado lack the means to deal with a humanitarian tragedy that is becoming increasingly worrying”.
Given this situation, “the Gulbenkian Foundation has decided to grant support of 80,000 euros that will be channelled to an NGO established in Cabo Delgado for over a decade and that has been supporting refugees since 2019: Helpo”.
This amount, “is intended especially to guarantee food to a thousand families with pregnant women and children up to 5 years old, for nine months, and also to support the school integration of children and young people.”
Helpo is already a partner of the Gulbenkian Foundation in a development project in Sao Tome and Principe, and in Mozambique has stood out in supporting communities near the city of Pemba, such as Silva Macua, Mahera, Impere and Miéze, says the foundation, which encourages “other institutions to help a population that is going through a dramatic moment, with little support and little humanitarian intervention.
