Users of national commercial banks are unsure about the introduction of new contactless bank cards, which allow payments to be made at POS (point of sale) terminals without having to enter a PIN (personal identification number) code.
Our reporting team has observed that many users are unaware of basic security mechanisms to protect their cards and, on the part of bank branch operators, there is also a lack of knowledge about the reasons for the change. The latter just say: “We were forced to change.”
With regard to limits on payments that do not require the use of a PIN, Domingo has learned from sources in the IT area of the Bank of Mozambique that users can incur daily payments without a PIN up to a limit of 1,800 meticais.
“This amount can be divided into small instalments, but, upon reaching the maximum of 1,800 meticais, the system starts to require the entry of the PIN,” they say.
