Six members of the same family died and six others were injured after their house was hit by lightning on Saturday in Manica province, central Mozambique, an official source told Lusa this Monday.
The self-built family home in Manhore, Cafumpe administrative post, Gondola district, caught fire after being struck by lightning, said Borges Viagem, Manica delegate from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD).
“The family took shelter in the house from the rain,” Viagem said, adding that the residence was made of adobe and straw, typical construction elements in the Mozambican countryside.
TVM reports that three of the victims were minors and that all died in the fire which followed the lightning strike
The victims in Gondola bring the number of deaths in Manica this rainy season to 12, all victims of lightning.
According to the INGD, around 2.2 million people could be affected by the 2022/2023 rainy season.
Mozambique is among the countries most severely affected by climate change, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, between April and October.
The 2020/2021 rainy season saw the country plagued by extreme weather such as Storm Chalane and Cyclones Eloise and Guambe, in addition to weeks of intense rain and flooding.
The 2018/2019 rainy season was one of the most severe in memory in Mozambique. Seven hundred and fourteen people died, including 648 victims of two of the biggest cyclones (Idai and Kenneth) ever to hit the country.
