Citizens in Lichinga, capital of Niassa province, are demanding that the city council speed up the introduction of urban public transport in order to reduce mobility problems caused by the escalating cost of living.
Interviewees told Radio Mozambique of their dismay at the current cost charged by motorcycle taxis, which is outstripping family budgets.
Currently, for example, the five-kilometre trip between Chiuaula and Massenger neighbourhoods costs around 200 meticais.
Those interviewed say that the expansion of the city makes the implementation of urban public transport in the provincial capital a matter of urgency.
Councillor for Culture and Sports in Lichinga, António Cuatuacha, says a lack of interest on the part of the entrepreneurial class is one of the factors contributing to the dearth of services.
The Lichinga city council does intend to invest, together with cooperation partners, just over 50 million meticais to purchase 20 vehicles to ease mobility for city dwellers, he explained.
