The president of the Mozambican Bar Association has called for “genuine dialogue” between politicians to put an end to the post-election crisis, indicating that Daniel Chapo, who takes office today, should be guided by the separation of powers.
“He is taking office at a time of electoral crisis and we understand as an order that we must open a genuine, serious dialogue that will lead us to profound reforms in our electoral system and other important areas of governance,” argued the president of the Mozambican Bar Association (OAM), Carlos Martins, in a statement to the press upon arriving this morning at Praça da Independência, in the heart of Maputo, where the inauguration ceremony of Daniel Chapo as the fifth President of Mozambique took place.
Martins argued that Chapo’s government should prioritize the “separation of powers” in order to achieve balance and social justice.
“The separation of powers must be effective, and there must be respect for the fundamental rights of citizens. Our society is deeply divided, deeply separated, and far removed from political ideals. The main step for a government sworn in under these conditions is to adopt positions and government policies that lead us to social peace,” Matins said.
“We follow the legislative branch in tow with the executive branch and often the judicial branch as well, so that there is balance. The separation of powers is the starting point for a fairer society,” added the president of the Mozambican Bar Association.
