Mozambique started the year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence campaign on Wednesday in central Manica province, calling for coordinated efforts to end violence against women and girls, in a context where women’s vulnerability has reportedly increased due to the pandemic of COVID-19.
The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Action, Nyeleti Mondlane said at the ceremony that the province was selected as the launching site due to the alarming incidents of domestic violence there.
The minister said that participants, including civil society organizations, public and private institutions, should take coordinated efforts and work together towards the end of violence against women.
“The 16 Days of Activism campaign is celebrated throughout the world with the objective to call and mobilize individuals, families, community and leaders to take concrete actions to prevent violence which has serious consequences to the lives of women and girls,” said the minister.

The event included an exhibition fair where the accomplishments of female leaders from charity institutes to local business were shown to the participants as an indicator of resilience.
Statistics show that violence against women is not only harmful to the victims, but also costs Mozambique an economic price.
Violence against women & girls is a global emergency requiring urgent action at all levels, in all spaces & by all people.
