Mozambique Airlines (LAM) has signed an agreement with the French oil company Total to provide transportation on the Maputo-Pemba-Afungi route, the state aviation company announced on Tuesday.
Pemba is the capital of Mozambique’s northern Cabo Delgado province, and Afungi the peninsula where the oil major is building an industrial complex for the extraction and liquefaction of natural gas – at an estimated €20 billion, the largest private investment currently underway in Africa.
The three-year contract provides that LAM will dedicate a Bombardier Q400 aircraft to Total’s needs. According to the manufacturer, the aircraft can carry up to 70 people.
General director of LAM João Jorge sees the agreement as an opportunity “capable of projecting the company” and allowing the “expansion of its customer portfolio”, noting that Total deals with passengers from many different geographical origins.
LAM will be responsible for ensuring the “rapid mobility of the workers involved in realising the gas project in the country”, he concluded.
