Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) announced today (20-01) that it will reschedule domestic flights to airports in coastal cities on account of the bad weather forecast there over the coming days.
“There will be rescheduling of flights, which will affect the schedule previously announced,” and “possible changes will be communicated to passengers” the statement reads.
A flight between Maputo and Nacala, on the coast of Nampula province in the north of the country, was forced to return to its point of departure yesterday Wednesday “due to intense rain accompanied by strong wind”.
“Conditions for a safe landing at Nacala Airport were not present,” the company explained.
Weather forecasts predict rain, wind and thunderstorms for the Mozambican coast, especially in the centre and north of the country, over the next seven days.
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) is also closely watching the evolution of atmospheric depressions east of Madagascar, which could turn into cyclones and approach Mozambique next week.
Adverse weather in Mozambique is seasonally concentrated in the October to April rainy season.
So far, at least 10 people have died, with a further 47,493 affected by rain, strong winds and other weather events in the current rainy season, according to the latest civil protection report.
