The number of passengers transported by Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM), the national flag carrier, is so far falling short of target, according to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Américo Muchanga.
LAM intends to transport around one million passengers by the end of the year.
As Muchanga explained in a brief interview with Televisão de Moçambique on Monday at the Maputo International Fair (FACIM) in Marracuene, LAM has already transported 330,000 passengers this year, across its domestic, regional and intercontinental services. It iwa expected to have transported around 500,000 passengers by now.
“In this first half of the year, LAM has already transported 330,000 passengers. This number is below what we intend to transport if we project this number for the end of the year. Our goal, at the level of all services, is to transport one million passengers by the end of this year,” he said.
Muchanga also acknowledged dissatisfaction among the company’s customers, but said that everything was being done to iron out anything not going as desired. He also gave assurances that LAM would continue flying to Lisbon, in Portugal.
“Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique intends to maintain the Maputo-Lisbon route,” Muchanga said. “We are working towards this. We want to operate this route under conditions in which it is sustainable and can generate operating profit. We are determined to maintain this route. It is a route that we want Mozambicans to trust that LAM will maintain and fly routes with the same quality that it has always flown since the beginning, while preparing to improve the quality of the services we offer.”
