Drivers along National Road Number 14, between Montepuez district and Pemba city, capital of the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, claim that the lack of patrols by the country’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) opens space for the return of the islamist terrorists who had earlier been driven from the area.
According to sources cited in Thursday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, despite the removal of the ‘illegal tolls’ put in place by terrorists about a fortnight ago to extort money from motorists, the road continues to be unsafe and drivers have been traveling in fear.
“The situation is worse because of the lack of patrols by the Defence and Security Forces. There are few cars travelling because of the lack of security and travellers are scared”, a man named Alifo Moisés told the paper.
“Whenever we get to that area where the terrorists ordered the cars to stop, we get scared”, he added. “We don’t have security”.
Road users are calling on the authorities to ensure that the FDS remain permanently stationed along the less populated areas because they believe that the woods create a favourable environment for terrorists to hide.
