The 15th edition of the Kugoma Mozambique Cinema Forum will take place from the 25th to the 30th of this month.
The co-production of the Association of Friends of the Cinema Museum in Mozambique (AAMCM), Max Film Creative, and ZOOM, in technical partnership with the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center (CCFM) and the Scala Cinema Theatre, will feature screenings at both cultural centres in Maputo.
There is also a parallel program at the Mafalala Museum, Makhll’Artes, and in Beira, in partnership with the Beira Visionário group, at Casa do Artista and Solange Beach Club.
At the opening ceremony on August 28th, the audience will have the opportunity to see another film concert, this time featuring an anaglyph 3D version of the short film ‘Dr Pyckle and Mr Pride’, a 1925 American black-and-white comedy horror film, accompanied by live music from faculty and students from the National School of Music.
The premiere of Margarida Cardoso’s latest feature film, ‘Banzo’ (2024), shot in São Tomé and Príncipe, will also be held on August 28th, followed by the usual opening cocktail reception in the garden.
With the support of FEF Criação África, through the French Embassy in Mozambique, and the Institut Français, through the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center, in addition to the support of MultiChoice Talent Factory, Kugoma will feature additional sessions on public television, STV and Netkanema.
In the mornings, two professionals will teach two masterclasses. Leonel Matusse will be presenting Film Criticism (August 26 and 27) for journalists, cultural managers, and communication students. Jared Nota will share techniques for a perfect pitch (August 29 and 30), aimed at screenwriters, directors, producers, and audio-visual students.
In the early afternoon, from Monday (August 25) to Wednesday (August 27), three conversation sessions are scheduled: Preliminary Results of the Study of the Audiovisual Sector, Audiovisual Narratives and Historical Themes, and Behind the Scenes of Film Production.
The evening’s program features 16 distinct film screenings, featuring over 50 films, at the CCFM, at 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm, and at Scala, at 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm.
There will be ten national short films and two feature-length films, a dozen short films and three feature-length films from the PALOP countries, five short films from the PALOP diaspora, a dozen short films from the Brazilian diaspora, and a number of other films premiering nationally.
In addition to a special program featuring four short films from Réunion Island, Mauritius, and Mayotte, in collaboration with FIFOI – International Indian Ocean Film Festival and La Kourmetragerie, with a representative in Maputo present.
On Friday, August 29th, at 8 pm, the Official Launch of the PALOP Cinema and Audiovisual Network project (phase 2) will take place, funded by Portuguese Cooperation.
And on Saturday, August 30th, at the same time, the KUGOMA 2025 Awards Ceremony, recognizing new talent from Mozambique and the PALOP countries, will be held, followed by a closing cocktail reception with music in the garden.
This year’s nominees include Melchior Ferreira, Xavier Bila, Bless Ngonhama, and Isidro Mangue (from Mozambique), Ricardo Leote and Olavo da Luz (from Cape Verde), and Bernardo Banza, Resem Verkron and Lord Over Makers (from Angola).
