Kidnapped businessman Eduardo Duarte was released after more than two months in captivity. He was kidnapped on February 21, 2025, at the Mozambique Olympic Committee building in Maputo city.
According to Canal de Moçambique, his release came after a ransom was paid to the kidnappers.
The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) announced in the days following Duarte’s kidnapping the arrest of three individuals suspected of involvement in the kidnapping, who are accused of robbery, criminal association and possession of prohibited weapons.

At the time, a pistol and AK-47 ammunition were seized. Authorities are continuing their investigations with the aim of capturing four other suspects who are still at large.
Duarte’s release brings relief to his family and the business community, but it also highlights the growing concern about security in the city of Maputo, where authorities are reinforcing their commitment to fighting organized crime and ensuring the safety of citizens.
