Mozambican athlete Kevin Loforte has taken bronze at the African Judo Championships in Senegal, beating Nigerian Alhasane in the -66 kg class.
Loforte had lost to Moroccan Boshita Abdelramane in the semi-finals and ended up being re-matched, defeating Jason Zacko of the Central African Republic.
The result means that Loforte is practically qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games already, now needing only to attend the Budapest World Cup from the 3rd to the 6th of June.
Still in the African Seniors competition, Mozambican Jacira Ferreira did not enjoy the same good fortune, succumbing to the Côte d’Ivoire’s Fofana Salimata in the semi-finals. Fighting at under 52 kg, Jacira lost the bronze medal to South African Grisel Charneca, after an encouraging start winning against Tunisian Ben Yones and Cape Verdean Silva Dlamila.
Another Mozambican senior, Jennie Munene, was eliminated in the first round.
Five Mozambican judokas – three men and two women – participated in the competition.
