Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Friday received in Maputo the Executive Director of the Irish company, Kenmare Resources, Tom Hickey, who reiterated Kenmare’s commitment to continue investing in Mozambique in the coming decades.
Kenmare mines heavy mineral sands in the coastal district of Larde, in the northern province of Nampula, producing the minerals ilmenite, rutile and zircon.
Cited by the independent television station STV, Hickey stressed the economic, social and fiscal contribution made by Kenmare’s mining operations, and expressed confidence in the business environment in Mozambique.
He said that his audience with Chapo was an opportunity to strengthen the ties between the company and the Mozambican government.
“We expect to continue employing more than 1,700 people and generating revenue for the government from taxes and royalties”, added Hickey.
He praised Chapo’s vision on the role of private business in national development. “He has a great idea of how companies such as Kenmare can invest for the country, for the nation, and the value we can bring, and we greatly appreciate this”, he said.
“Mozambique has been good for Kenmare”, Hickey added, “and we hope that it will continue being a place where we can grow and where we can continue to add value for the nation in the coming years”.
