The Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, Helena Kida, this morning (June 16) visited the Special Penitentiary Establishment for Women in Maputo, commonly known as Ndlavela Women’s Prison.
A press release sent to Carta de Moçambique on Tuesday afternoon (15-06) stated that Minister Kida was visiting the prison to investigate the accusations contained in a report released yesterday by the Public Integrity Centre (CIP), and also to learn about rehabilitation activities at the unit.

Deputy Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, Filimão Suazi, acting as spokesperson for the Council of Ministers yesterday, confirmed that he was aware of allegations of sexual exploitation in the penitentiary, and that the ministry was triggering an investigation.
“The Ministry of Justice has heard about this, and we are taking measures to ascertain the veracity [of the allegations]. When we have concrete knowledge, we will release further details,” Deputy Minister Suaze said.
