The reasons for the dismissals have not yet been made public, but the termination of office takes place a day after rioting in the village of Xinavane, in Manhiça district, yesterday morning.
According to ‘Notícias’ sources, the handling of the riots following on from the strike of workers at the Açucareira de Xinavane in Manhiça precipitated the dismissal of General Inácio Dina from the post of PRM commander in Maputo province.
The demonstration by the sugar factory workers allegedly escaped police control at the Xinavane administrative post, resulting in acts of vandalism by the strikers and public and characterised by the destruction of public and private infrastructure, including the local police post. Protesters also set fire to vehicles and erected barricades on main roads.
Yesterday’s riots followed the alleged arrest on Tuesday of seven sugar factory workers, later taken to the District Command in Manhiça, on charges of instigating a strike.
