Jorge Ferrão, the former minister of Education and Human Development and current rector of the Pedagogical University of Maputo, believes that only a few schools in the Mozambican capital will be able to provide the Covid-19 prevention measures required for reopening, even under the “relaxation” of measures introduced in the presidential decree.
“In some of the schools in the capital cities, it is possible to find some kind of response, but it is not a response of a 100% ideal scenario. It could be 50% … But an effort has to be made,” he said.
The rector argues that schools have a responsibility to provide safety conditions for their students and workers in the short and long term.
“… Or we will have to make some radical changes. If we do not make these logistical changes, we could take advantage of or opt for more technical systems, such as schools having a platform that would allow access, etc.,” he suggested.
“This is a vision that we could have been adjusting to for some time, but were not, because we were distracted by the vast number of students in our schools.”
The rector was speaking on Monday on the ‘Noite Informativa’ STV programme addressing the topic: “Education in a State of Emergency: the proposed return to school, payment of tuition fees and adjustment of the calendar”.
