Mozambique has been officially included in the ‘Green Cities in Action for Africa’ initiative, funded by Italy with the aim of building more inclusive, green and resilient cities.
Mozambique thereby joins a network of ten African cities, with Pemba in Cabo Delgado province and Chimoio in Manica as pilot cities.
The announcement was made at the Italian pavilion of the Maputo International Trade Fair (FACIM 2025) on Tuesday by Maria Pescante, deputy head of office at the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).
“This is a project carried out in ten cities across five countries on the African continent, in which, thanks to the joint commitment of all of us, we were able to also include Mozambique and, in particular, the cities of Pemba and Chimoio,” Pescante announced.
According to Pescante, the project is still in the preparatory phase, with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supporting Pemba and Chimoio in defining a strategic vision and developing intervention plans.
Among the areas of greatest urgency, integrated solid waste management, considered by AICS to be the driving force behind the initiative, stands out.
“Since the first meetings in Pemba and Chimoio, the centrality of integrated waste management as a driving force has clearly emerged. We want to transform waste into energy and compost, creating new employment opportunities and improving the urban environment,” the AICS deputy director explained.
In addition to addressing waste, the program also includes other initiatives with a direct impact on communities, such as the promotion of urban gardens, pollution reduction, urban reforestation, and more participatory management of public spaces.
These actions, according to Pescante, will contribute to creating cities that are more resilient to climate change and offer better living conditions for the population.
Mozambique’s inclusion in Green Cities reinforces bilateral cooperation with Italy, which in recent years has supported sustainable development, food security and urban modernization projects here.
“Green Cities demonstrates the importance of international cooperation. For us, Mozambique is a strategic partner, and we want the cities of Pemba and Chimoio to be examples of green and inclusive transformation,” Maria Pescante stressed.
With this project, Mozambique becomes part of an African network of sustainable cities, benefiting from funding, technical know-how and international partnerships to accelerate the green transition in urban areas
