The Government of Venezuela has awarded former Mozambican president Joaquim Chissano the Order of Francisco de Miranda’ in recognition of the former head of state’s “contribution to all forms of struggle, independence and development”.
Venezuela’s ambassador to Maputo, Carlos Juarez, quoted this Wednesday by Mozambican daily ‘Notícias’, said that President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela had decided to distinguish Joaquim Chissano for his role in the “struggle for freedom, independence and sovereignty” of Mozambique and other nations.
The award ceremony, restricted according to Covid-19 limitations, took place on Tuesday at the Venezuelan embassy in Maputo.
Speaking on the occasion, the former Mozambican president considered the recognition proof of the “strong relations of friendship, brotherhood and solidarity that exist between the Venezuelan and Mozambican peoples”.
Joaquim Chissano pointed out that the ties between the two peoples were extant “since the days of the struggle of the two nations against slavery, oppression and colonial exploitation”.
In addition to Joaquim Chissano, President Nicolas Maduro has conferred the Order of Francisco de Miranda on four other African leaders: Sam Nujoma (Namibia), Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah (Namibia), Oppah Muchinguri (Zimbabwe); and Luzia Ingles Van-Dúnem (Angola).
