The Japanese Government today formalised the disbursement of almost US$20 million (€17 million) for the construction of a rural water supply network in Niassa province northern Mozambique.
“The aim is to improve access to drinking water, as well as the lives of the population living in the Nacala Corridor,” the Mozambican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation said in a press release, moments after the signing of the agreement between Mozambique’s foreign minister, Verónica Macamo, and the representative of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Hiroaki Endo.
The project was announced in December when the Japanese foreign minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, made a two-day working visit to Mozambique.
Besides this project, the parties also announced two other projects worth around €1.4 million.
In the first, the Japanese government committed to funding the supply of speedboats and other equipment for Mozambican police authorities. In the second, Japan will strengthen support for the closure of the Hulene dump, where 16 people died after a mountain of waste collapsed in February 2018.
