The Japanese government has donated 3.9 million dollars to the World Food Program (WFP) in Mozambique to address food insecurity in drought-affected communities in the southern region of country, while also focusing on families displaced due to terrorism in the north.
Of this total, according to a statement issued by the Japanese embassy in Maputo, 2.4 million dollars will support WFP in the purchase of food and provision of humanitarian assistance to over 36,100 people displaced by the ongoing terrorist attacks in parts of Cabo Delgado province.
The statement explains that the remaining amount, 1.5 million, will be used to respond to the overall food security situation affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“This will provide emergency food assistance to 17,800 people experiencing food insecurity aggravated by drought in Gaza and Inhambane provinces, from October 2022 to March 2023”, it indicates.
Citing the State of the Climate Report, produced by the Mozambique Meteorology Institute (INAM) and WFP, the document recalls that in 2021, southern Mozambique recorded the driest last quarter in 40 years, delaying and affecting the planting season.
It promises that the Government of Japan’s contribution will help improve food security among Mozambique’s most vulnerable families who have been affected by recurring weather disasters and the prolonged conflict in the north.
“The Government of Japan is extremely concerned about the food security situation in Mozambique”, the Japanese Ambassador, KIimura Hajime, said, cited in the document.
“We will continue with our efforts to ensure comprehensive security in collaboration with the international community, including the G7. We stand side by side with the Mozambican people and will continue to support them in facing the challenges of the ongoing crisis”, the diplomat stressed.
For his part, WFP Deputy Director, Pierre Lucas, believes that the contribution of the Japanese government helps his organization to provide humanitarian food assistance to the most vulnerable people in both southern and northern Mozambique.
“Japan’s ongoing contributions are saving lives, improving food security for the most vulnerable families and helping to build the resilience of communities to future shocks”, he said.
Thanks to the generous contribution of the Government of #Japan, @WFP will support with humanitarian food assistance:
