Following the capsize of the service boat ‘Cara’, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 16, near Buoy P in Beira Bay, the Maritime Transport Regulatory Authority (ITRANSMAR) says the search for the seven crew members still missing, six of whom are Indian nationals and one Mozambican, is ongoing.
At least three Indian nationals died and seven others remain missing after a vessel carrying 21 Indian and Mozambican crew members capsized off the port of Beira, ITRANSMAR announced on Friday.
In a statement, ITRANSMAR said the incident occurred on Wednesday morning when a vessel sank in Beira Bay while transporting crew members for assistance and a crew change from the tanker Sea Quest, anchored in the area.
“According to the survivors, after reaching its destination, the vessel was hit by a high-intensity wave, which caused imbalance and subsequent sinking,” Itransmar reported, adding that 14 Indian and seven Mozambican crew members were on board at the time of the incident.
Authorities explained that, of the foreign crew members, five were rescued, but three were pulled from the water already dead. Six Mozambicans were also rescued alive, while one remains missing.
Itransmar said that a multi-sectoral team including divers and other local entities, is already on site, “committed to search and rescue operations” to locate the seven crew members still missing.
The Indian Embassy in Maputo has already announced that it is monitoring the situation of the Indian crew members in Beira.
According to a statement, ITRANSMAR has declared a state of alert and is calling for the active collaboration of the maritime and coastal community, especially fishermen, ship owners and other bona fide vessel operators, to remain vigilant and immediately report any signs or appearance of bodies or debris associated with the accident.
The areas under increased surveillance and patrolling include Praia Nova, Grande Hotel, Veleiro, Desaguador, Clube Náutico, Biques, Estoril, Régulo Luís, Rio Maria, Njalane, Casa Partida and Chinamacondo, as well as the beaches in the districts of Muanza, Cheringoma, Buzi and Marromeu.
As part of the search, ITRANSMAR remains in constant contact with the fishing and maritime communities and reiterates that it will continue to coordinate efforts with partner institutions – INAMAR, the Navy, PCLF, SENSAP, and other local entities – to ensure a rapid and effective response to the demands of the operation.
The Maritime Transport Regulatory Authority also reiterated its commitment to navigational safety and the preservation of human life at sea, calling on all maritime stakeholders to redouble their vigilance, caution and solidarity at this critical time.
