Speakers at one of the panels of the second edition of MOZGROW on the theme “Challenges of Agricultural Marketing” outlined the gaps and solutions of a sector whose potential is plain to see.
One solution, according to Horácio Fernando, representative of the Agrarian Aggregation and Valorization Centre, is “to regulate the agricultural market to avoid excess goods”.
From Portugal comes the experience of the Clube de Produtores Continente. who have been in the agricultural commercialization market for 20 years, investing in strategic partnerships guaranteeing the sale of products from farms to markets.
According to president Ondina Afonso, organization is essential for the development of the entire agricultural chain.
How to replicate the Portuguese experience in the Mozambican market? The Agrarian Aggregation and Valorization Centre’s Horácio Fernando says there is still a lot to do.
Producer Carlos Mucatchua says the biggest problem for agricultural commercialization in Mozambique is the lack of organization of the markets.
“There is production, but failures in marketing compromise producer’s income,” he points out.
The sector’s challenges extend to other levels, with speakers agitating for more flexible financing in order to increase levels of agricultural production.
Prices farmers get for produce are very low compared to operating costs, the panellists agree.
