The Mozambican authorities have now accepted that the international terrorist organisation calling itself “Islamic State” (and also known as ISIS, ISIL or Daesh) is involved in the murderous attacks suffered by the northern province of Cabo Delgado, since October 2017.
The National Defence and Security Council (CNDS), a body that advises President Filipe Nyusi, met in Maputo on Thursday and concluded that “the authorship of the attacks has been claimed by the Islamic State, a terrorist organisation, shows that we are facing foreign aggression perpetrated by terrorists”.
A CNDS press release said it had analysed information about the public order and security situation, particularly in Cabo Delgado, but gave no details.
It praised the defence and security forces “for their efforts to restore public order and security, and the normal functioning of institutions”, and urged Cabo Delgado communities “to continue their commitment to supporting” the Mozambican forces.
It did not mention the advances by the terrorists earlier this month, in which they had briefly occupied the capitals of three districts (Mocimboa da Praia, Quissanga and Muidumbe).
The CNDS also discussed the state of emergency, decreed by Nyusi on 1 April, to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. The release praised the efforts of health workers, but deplored the attitudes of those who had broken quarantine “thus undermining the efforts to combat this evil”.
It urged all citizens to observe the recommendations issued by the relevant government bodies”, to restrict the transmission of the coronavirus.
