Mozambique is “on the verge of being colonized by creditors” – Teodato Hunguana

Teodato Hunguana says the country is on the verge of being colonized by international creditors.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Matola municipal assembly session, the former justice minister said the country’s debt situation is more serious than it looks, and it is not just money that is at stake.

Teodato Hunguana says the possible consequences amount to Mozambique being colonized by international lenders because of high levels of indebtedness.

Hunguana noted first that the revelations on public debt contracted by the country are a blow to Mozambicans and especially to those who were not even part of the former government. And he insists that the people have the right to know the true value of repayments over the coming years, without diminishing the accountability of those involved in the process – although Hunguana says this is not a priority at the moment as solutions must be found.

“The issue of accountability is moral and political. There is a solution to the debt problem. Frelimo’s Central Committee has clearly stated that we have to look into this debt, and determine what [in this debt] is in fact related to the defence of the country. Here, we do not compromise the safety of Mozambicans. However, there is also a part of this process that relates to private interests. Those are the interests that must be called to account.”
