The Irish government plans to invest 406.8 million meticais (€5.4 million) in social infrastructure projects in the province of Niassa, northern Mozambique, provincial authorities announced yesterday.
According to a note from the Niassa Provincial Executive Council, the funding, which will be implemented up until 2030, will contribute to the construction of boarding schools, solar-powered water supply systems, a maternal and child health unit, as well as irrigation and processing systems “to improve the agricultural value chain”, among others.
“Our partnership goes beyond financing; it is about contributing to the promotion of sustainable development and the construction of a dignified future,” said Edgar Ussene, representative of the Irish Embassy in Niassa, quoted in the document.
For Celestina Teófilo, director of the provincial governor’s office, also cited in the note, Irish funding places the population at the centre of priorities, “guaranteeing sustainable results” for the province’s development.
In 2022, Ireland made available more than 16 million meticais (€212,700) for humanitarian assistance to those displaced by terrorism in Niassa province. In addition, Ireland pledged more than US$700,000 (€594,000) to support social projects in the province.
